1/10/20 Big Eddy Road Ice Jam; conditions improve

On Monday morning January 6, the Borough was notified of an ice jam on the Kenai River causing flooding in the Salmon Run Acres subdivision off Big Eddy Road northwest of Soldotna. The roads and emergency management departments barricaded the flooded roads for safety, and continues to monitor flooding in that area. Water levels have gone down slightly and froze with the cold temperatures.

Heavy equipment has been able to improve some portions of Eddy Lane, however Riverside Dr. remains inaccessible. Motorists are asked to avoid this area. With these weather conditions, continue to use safety precautions as there is significant amounts of water under the ice, and the ice thickness is somewhat deceptive in many locations along the river edge and larger lakes.

River conditions continue to be monitored by the Office of Emergency Management, and the freeze up of the river is expected to continue upstream due to cold temperatures.
