Cooper Landing – On Monday evening, June 22, a firefighter working on the Juneau Lake Fire in Chugach National Forest encountered a bear and sustained minor injuries.
Due to the remote location of the encounter, the most direct transport was a life med helicopter which airlifted the firefighter from the Juneau Lake site to a hospital in Anchorage.
The firefighter walked from the encounter site to the helicopter and is undergoing standard treatment for animal bites.
Notification of any injury in wildfire engages emergency response protocols. The Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 4 implemented its "incident within an incident" practices to deliver timely aid to the firefighter.
Firefighting is an inherently dangerous activity. Agencies continually work to mitigate those dangers through training firefighters for encounters with hazards, and providing emergency response leadership and support.
