September 5, 2019 9:00 p.m. Swan Lake Fire Operational Update

Today’s sunshine and warm weather sparked some fire activity on the Swan Lake Fire but the majority was well inside the fire perimeter. Some fire activity was noted near the north shore of Skilak Lake on the southern end of the fire, southeast of the Upper Skilac Lake Campground. Crews continue to “mop up” around recreation sites within the Skilac Wildlife Recreation Area and along the loop road into the area.

Travelers along the Sterling highway can expect to see smoke and perhaps some fire activity, within the fire perimeter. Fire managers feel confident in the strength of the fire lines on both sides of the fire but crews continue to search for and extinguish hot spots.

Tomorrow in Cooper Landing firefighters will test the system of pumps, hoses and sprinklers that they have been setting up in the area for the past week. This “plumbing” would be used in the unlikely event that fire progressed past our contingency fire line and entered the community.
