08/23/19 4:00PM Snow River Flood Advisory Update

The National Weather Service in Anchorage, Alaska has extended the Flood Advisory for Snow River and Kenai Lake until noon AKDT Sunday, August 25, 2019 and the Kenai River from Cooper Landing to Skilak Lake until 12:15 PM AKDT Sunday, August 25, 2019.

The Snow glacier dammed lake continues to release. Water levels on the Snow River and Kenai Lake are steadily rising and are reflective of the 2017 outburst event. Expect the water level on the Snow River to crest late Saturday and then begin to slowly drop Sunday.

Kenai Lake at Cooper Landing is expected to rise another 2.5 to 3.5 feet before cresting late Saturday or early Sunday. Water levels on the Kenai River below Skilak Lake will rise more moderately to near bankfull conditions by early next week.

Water levels are currently at the point of where past events have caused flooding of the Primrose campground and other low lying areas.

In August of 2019, the USGS installed a temporary webcam on the Southeast edge of the lake. The camera transmits several images per day via satellite and provides a near real time view of the Snow Glacier Dammed lake. To access the webcam, https://www.weather.gov/aprfc/snowGDL
