8/26/19 4:35 p.m. Sterling Highway and Swan Lake Fire UPDATE

The Highway is still open. Pilot cars are operating in both directions between milepost 45 and 71. Travelers should expect lengthy delays. The is in accordance with the Transportation plan.
To clarify, traffic is being controlled at milepost 71 and 45 with a pilot vehicle operating in both directions from those locations. Local traffic headed ONLY to Cooper Landing is being allowed past milepost 45 but vehicles may not wait there at milepost 53. If you live in Cooper Landing or have business between those two mileposts and you want to continue west toward Soldotna, you must drive back east to milepost 45 and get in line behind the pilot car.
Firing operations are continuing along the highway and we expect to have those completed by the end of shift tonight. Heavy smoke will continue to impact the highway into the night. We strongly advise people NOT to travel if at all possible.
