Recent activity on the Swan Lake Fire and subsequent growth, resulted in Sterling and Cooper Landing reaching the READY stage of the Kenai Peninsula Borough’s Ready-Set-Go! program. Ready-Set-Go! is a national program to ensure that communities have time to plan for evacuations, and fire managers have tools for planning and communicating 12, 24 and 36 hours out from an approaching fire.
The RSG! lines will be updated for Sterling |
Cooper Landing and Sterling are both at the Level 1 READY stage which means be ready for POTENTIAL evacuation because there is a fire in your area. It means create a plan to transport and care for family members with mobility needs, pets or livestock and monitor social media, news and radio for current Ready-Set-Go! information in your area. It also means it’s time to relocate things like flammable tanks and supplies from your home and outbuildings. This is the time to consider the six “P”s: People, Pets, Pills, Pictures, Papers and your Personal computer, that you will take if you need to evacuate.
KPB Alerts are not sent at the READY stage but will be sent at the SET stage. If the fire moves closer to the SET line, it will trigger Level 2 SET. Level 2 means be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice and means significant danger in your area. At this stage, it’s time to load your six P’s and other items into your vehicle. You may not have time to gather things later. This level is the only advance notice you will have to finish getting ready to evacuate.
If you ever get to Level 3 GO, it’s time to evacuate NOW; leave immediately. Please go when you are asked to leave.
